JROTC Navy Practice Test

SSN submarines, which stands for "Submarine, Ship, Nuclear," are indeed nuclear-powered vessels. This means they utilize nuclear reactors for propulsion, allowing them to operate submerged for extended periods without needing to surface for air, as conventional diesel-powered submarines do. The nuclear power source helps them achieve greater speed and endurance, making them suitable for a variety of missions, from intelligence gathering to direct combat.

The other features listed do not accurately describe SSN submarines. While some submarines may carry ballistic missiles, this characteristic is associated with a different class of submarines designated as SSBNs (Submarine, Ship, Ballistic Missile). Diesel-powered submarines are not a hallmark of SSNs, as these specifically refer to nuclear vessels. Furthermore, while SSN submarines are equipped with torpedo tubes to engage submerged targets, their capabilities are not limited solely to surface combat; they are designed for a wide range of engagements.
